Raheem Sterling’s Chelsea cheeky contract demand as Premier League hope flops

Raheem Sterling is being ousted out of Chelsea just two years after signing and making a cheeky contract demand.

News broke on Sunday afternoon of Sterling’s dismay at being left out of the Blues match day squad to face Manchester City in their Premier League opener.

He along with 20 other players have now been banished from training with the first team by manager Enzo Maresca who insists the decision ‘isn’t brutal but honest’.

In what is now a pretty sad interview, the England winger joked about insisting a clause was added to his contract and it’s all about his initiation.

Sitting down with Sterling at Cobham, former Sky Sports reporter Geoff Shreeves posed the question of whether he’d done his customary new club initiation of singing a song.

The former Manchester City and Liverpool star explained it had in fact been “knocked back” and he had a couple of weeks to learn the lyrics. Sterling, however, fell short of revealing what tune he’d be banging out in the customary humiliating new club ritual.

“Honestly, I can’t say,” he replied once pushed for a track name.

The 29-year-old admitted: “I’m not the best at remembering the words, I normally just mumble. It keeps getting delayed but I’ll do it soon.”

It turns out it’s not the act of getting up ‘on stage’ that the forward dreads, but it being recorded.

“You know what it is?,” Raheem said. “It’s you singing and someone having it on their phone and like six months later someone shows you, that’s what I’m not looking forward to.

“I don’t mind, I have no problem going up singing. If there’s no phones involved I’d go up today, tomorrow, every single day but it’s when someone’s gonna show you six months later, that’s what I’m not looking forward to.”

Stirring the pot, Geoff quipped: “It’ll be out on social media of course!”

Sterling laughed: “No we’ve got to get that in the contract, impossible. Got to get that written in straight away”.

Attention soon turned to the more serious matter of what the player who’s made 82 appearances for England since 2012, hoped to achieve at Chelsea.

“And what would regard success in your time here?” Geoff asked.

With a straight face, Sterling reeled off his ambitions: “Lifting trophies, lifting the Premier League. I think it’s been a couple of years now they haven’t won the Premier League so that would be a real success.

“And I said every single year challenge for the Premier League, Europe and obviously getting as many cups we can and Carabao and FA Cup as well, but I think the most important to be challenging every year in the Premier League.”

In his two seasons at Chelsea, the club has finished 12th and 6th in the league respectively, failing also to get hands on silverware.
