Alan Shearer has warned Chelsea forward Cole Palmer not to get too big-headed.
The England whiz endured a difficult start to the new Premier League season by starting in the Blues’ 2-0 loss to his former club Manchester City. Things improved for him a matter of days later, though, as he scooped up the PFA Young Player of the Year award, having netted 22 goals and assisted 11 in his debut campaign in west London.
He also followed it up with an impressive Euro 2024 campaign which saw him assist Ollie Watkins’ winning goal in England’s semi-final win over the Netherlands, before sweeping home a fine equaliser against Spain in the final. But while things have been going well for him, Shearer warned the 22-year-old that Chelsea’s spending spree and general uncertainty may effect his campaign.

While speaking to Betfair, Shearer said: “Cole Palmer needs to go again, and I have no doubt that he will. He should enjoy this moment and embrace it.
“He looks so chilled; there’s an arrogance about him, in the best sense he’s got that swagger, which I rate. He’s like, ‘pass me the ball, I’m not sweating it’, and that’s how he rolled last season.

“After a blinder like that, he’s got to somehow step it up again, as tricky as that’ll be in this Chelsea squad because they’re playing a different game to your average club.
“But we’ve seen the talent, we’ve seen the ability, we’ve seen he can score goals and we’ve seen he can handle the pressure. The one thing you’ve got to do is go again, because that’s what top players do.

“The top players enjoy what they’ve done, they get a taste for it and think, ‘I want more of that’, and that is what Palmer’s got to do now too.”
Palmer will most likely start for the Blues when they travel to Molineux to face Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday. He did also appear from the bench in Enzo Maresca’s side’s 2-0 home victory over Swiss side Servette FC in their UEFA Europa Conference play-off first leg on Thursday night.
