‘Chelsea have handled Sterling badly however Chilwell remedy is even worse’

Not since Liz Truss has anyone tanked the value of Sterling quite like Chelsea have this week.

But never mind the classless treatment of Raheem Sterling, the way Chelsea and Enzo Maresca are dealing with Ben Chilwell is even more disgraceful. How many clubs would tell a player who won the Champions League for them just three years ago that they’re not wanted – in public?

Chelsea youth product Conor Gallagher was flogged to Atletico Madrid to balance the books which is a farce given he was one of their better players last season.

Sterling, 29, is a player the Blues heavily invested in just two years ago with almost £50m and are now tanking his value by openly saying they don’t want him.

The same goes for 27-year-old Chilwell. Chelsea spent £50m on the left back in 2020, in that season he played for them in a Champions League final and won it.

Now it is obvious he has had injury problems and Chelsea may think moving him on now makes sense. But shunning him away from first-team training and making it public he’s not wanted? Deary me.

Manchester United obviously want to sell Jadon Sancho but they wised up this summer and reintegrated him into the first team to try to get him match fit and protect his value.

Chelsea have basically said Chilwell is not good enough. Why would anyone bid a proper amount for him now? They have to offload him before Friday so will need to accept a lower fee.. The same goes for Sterling.

Former Prime Minister Truss famously sent the value of the pound plummeting with a disastrous mini budget in 2022. But Todd Boehly and Blues bosses are matching the PM, who spent less time in the job than the life-span of the Daily Star’s famous lettuce.

If they wanted Sterling and Chilwell out, then there was a way to do it. Privately tell them they should look for other clubs, accept offers when they come. But they have effectively told everyone that they can low ball them now because they desperately want rid.

Chilwell should be getting a glorious goodbye. He’s struggled with injuries but he’s helped the club reach the pinnacle of European football. That deserves a fine send off and not being rushed out the backdoor so Chelsea can balance their books or even buy more players for a dressing room fit to burst.

Slot is strictly business on the touchline

Liverpool fans will have to get used to a very different type of manager. Arne Slot is not going to be the fist-pumping, chest beating and one-line wonder that Jurgen Klopp was.

Of course, Reds fans won’t care how Slot acts if the Dutchman keeps winning football games.

But it will be interesting to see how he develops his relationship with the Reds diehard.

Clarke was a wanted man this summer

Klopp wasn’t afraid to call out supporters in his early days to create a better Anfield atmosphere. Soon he had them right in tune with his heavy metal football.

But Slot is solely focussed on getting the football right on the pitch rather than playing to the gallery. Maybe when he’s settled in he will embrace the support more but for now he’s hoping to win them over with results.

Onside: Ipswich landing Jack Clarke from Sunderland for £15m. Very sound business from the newly-promoted side.

Offside: Barcelona letting Ilkay Gundogan walk away because of financial problems. Almost as badly run as Chelsea it seems.
