Man takes psychedelic whereas doing boring duties – nevertheless it ‘obliterates actuality’

One rarely seen ‘legal’ psychedelic drug is reportedly so powerful it has some people’s minds “dripping all over the floor”.

Salvia – or ‘Holy Sage’ – is the name given to a Mexican plant that contains psychoactive chemicals which can have a dramatic effect on the brain. When taken, the ‘legal’ drug hits quickly and lasts for a short, but intense, amount of time.

Although it’s been under the radar since it popped onto the scene in 2005, the internet is strewn with riveting – and quite funny – videos of people trying the drug, which most people only do once, because of the intensity.

In the early days of YouTube, a shrewd, fun-loving US bloke referred to as ‘Salvia Eric’ went viral when he posted a string of clips showing him high on the drug trying to accomplish simple tasks such as gardening.

In these hilarious documentations, Eric can be seen rolling around the floor laughing hysterically moments after taking the substance. In one clip, he says to the camera: “Excuse me, I have to go to space now”, before gently subsiding onto his car’s headrest.

Speaking to Vice this year, ‘Eric’ said: “I couldn’t think of anyone who enjoyed Salvia, because of the weirdness of it. It’s like you’re trapped inside a kaleidoscope. You can lose any sense of reality on it.

“It was definitely a spiritual experience, yes – but it was also a battle. I didn’t want to lose control. It can obliterate reality.”

Eric’s videos found their way into the mainstream media in 2010 when then 18-year-old star Miley Cyrus was reported to have taken Salvia and “freaked out” as a result.

TMZ published images of the singer/actor taking the drug, and then reported she had mistaken Friday Night Lights actor Grey Damon for her at the time ex-boyfriend (but future fiancé) Liam Hemsworth.

The media frenzy that followed led to the drug becoming a “controlled substance” in the US, where it is still available to buy in many states, but illegal to sell on the streets.

Salvia is still legal in most countries in the world, but in the UK where it began life as a “legal high” it is now regulated by the Psychoactive Substances Act 2016.
