Ex-Manchester United striker Wout Weghorst has joined Dutch giants Ajax – but his former fans are raging over the move.
Weghort, 32, had a less-than-memorable loan spell at Old Trafford in 2023 from Burnley. He only scored two goals for the club – both in cup competitions – but did walk away with a League Cup winner’s medal.
However, having spent last season on loan in Germany at Hoffenheim, he has now joined ex-Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson at Ajax from Burnley. And despite his bland spell in Manchester, it appears as though fans did actually like him.

One wrote, on social media site Twitter/X: “Ajax’s gain is Manchester United’s loss.” And another said: “Sweet Dutch prince, we will miss you at Old Trafford.” And a third raged: “He would do a better job than most of our current squad, to be fair.”
Weghort’s contract runs until June 30, 2026, and he will wear the number 25 for his new side – a number formerly worn by club icon Klaas-Jan Huntelaar who later joined Real Madrid.
Ajax Technical Director Alex Kroes: “Wout stands for an absolute top sports experience, and we find that extremely important at Ajax. He is a prolific striker who constantly makes things difficult for every opponent. There are many matches coming up in the next few months, so we are happy that Wout is joining us.”
In his announcement video, Weghorts admits to being an Ajax fan as a child, and having the club’s kit growing up.
He joins ex-Middlesbrough striker Chuba Akpom as the latest lower-league English club signing to move to the club in recent years. . . must to the annoyance of Manchester United fans, apparently.
