Football followers cut up as Walker’s England snub might spell Three Lions profession finish

England fans have offered up mixed reactions on social media to the news of Kyle Walker’s exclusion from the Three Lions squad for the upcoming September internationals.

With Gareth Southgate stepping down following England’s European Championship final defeat to Spain earlier this summer, U21’s boss Lee Carsley has stepped up in the interim.

The former Everton midfielder oversaw the Young Lions side that won the U21s European Championships last summer and he has called up a number of that squad for the games against the Republic of Ireland and Finland next month.

However, one notable absence from the England squad is Manchester City star Kyle Walker.

The 34-year-old has won 90 international caps for England, but he has not been named in Carsley’s squad. Instead, he has opted to name Walker’s teenage teammate, 19-year-old Rico Lewis and Newcastle United’s Tino Livramento, to go alongside the selection of Trent Alexander-Arnold at right-back.

Additionally, Newcastle’s Kieran Trippier also announced his retirement from international football, just hours before the England squad was announced. While Walker did not enjoy the best of tournaments at the Euros, his exclusion from the England squad of which he has been such a big part of is a shock.

But, the decision to leave him out has left some England fans divided on social media. One City fan wrote on X: “Happy for Rico, but Walker doesn’t deserve that.”

A second commented: “Surprised Kyle Walker wasn’t in the England squad, is he injured?” And a third added: “Anyone know why Kyle Walker has been left out? If it isn’t injury or fitness reasons I’m very confused on why Walker has been left out.”

However, there were some fans on social media actively celebrating Carsley’s decision to drop the right-back. “Kyle Walker’s reign of terror has finally been put to a permanent end,” wrote one fan, with another adding: “Kyle Walker being left out of the squad after that abysmal final performance.”

A third said: “no kyle walker bless u carsley.” And a fourth commented: “Big fan of this squad ngl, great to see gomes and gibbs white called up and no Kyle walker is a cause for celebration too.”

There were no other real selection shockers from Carsley, who has called up four uncapped players for the two September internationals. Angel Gomes, Morgan Gibbs-White, Noni Madueke and Livramento have all been named in the England senior squad, with all four having previously played for Carsley.

Nick Pope has returned to the England squad while Aaron Ramsdale has been dropped. And there is also a return to the the Three Lions camp for City winger Jack Grealish.
