Paralympian vanishes in Paris earlier than opening ceremony as police launch probe

A Paralympian has vanished in Paris ahead of the opening ceremony.

An inquest has been opened into the “worrying disappearance” of the Rwandan athlete – who represents their nation in sitting volleyball. According to Huffington Post, she arrived with the Rwandan team in France earlier this month.

On 20 August, the volleyball player left with a group to visit a restaurant – but she never returned. An investigation has now been opened by the Nanterre prosecutor’s office.

A statement on Wednesday morning, ahead of the opening ceremony, confirmed “the referral to the BRDP (the Brigade for the Suppression of Crimes against Persons) as part of an investigation into a worrying disappearance.”

The Rwandan ambassador has since visited the location of the disappearance, after they were made aware of the athlete vanishing.

The athlete was due to open their Olympic campaign on Thursday 29 August at 11am, in a Pool B group match against Brazil. That game is still due to go ahead at the Paris Expo Porte de Versailles.

Rwanda also face Slovenia and Canada in their group.

She isn’t the only sportsperson to disappear this summer and in July a member of Cuba’s Olympic staff went missing in Paris.

Meanwhile, at the Commonwealth Games in 2022, three Sri Lankan team members disappeared. Two of them were found, but the third remains missing.
