Meghan Markle confirmed true colors with ‘steely’ and ‘historic’ second on tour

A royal expert has pointed out a “historic moment” that revealed Meghan Markle’s troubled relationship with the rest of the Royal Family.

Since stepping back from her Royal duties, Meghan Markle has been quite open about her struggles with certain aspects of Royal life, and what she refers to as ‘the Firm’ – the monarchy itself and the aides who work for the Royal Family.

In her explosive interview with Oprah Winfrey, alongside Prince Harry, she first aired some of her grievances against ‘the Firm’, including her claim that she sought help when experiencing suicidal thoughts, only to be denied.

Despite the Duchess of Sussex’s candidness about the difficulties she faced while living within the monarchy since leaving the UK, one royal expert has pointed out that there was a “historic” moment that revealed the state of her relationship with the rest of the Firm.

The expert, Robert Lacey, a royal author and historian, explained that this moment occurred in 2019 when Meghan and Harry embarked on what would turn out to be their last official overseas tour representing the crown.

The couple visited Southern Africa and made a documentary with ITV about their time in South Africa, Botswana, Malawi, and Angola.

During their well-received tour, which mirrored the success of previous overseas visits, Meghan Markle’s candid revelation in a documentary highlighted her struggles within the royal household, marking what was described as the “historic climax” of the trip that revealed a “steely” side to the Duchess.

Lacey added: “She went on to say she was worried about the effect of keeping a stiff upper lip on her mental health, adding: ‘I think that what that does internally is probably really damaging . . . I’ve said for a long time to H (that’s what I call [Harry]), it’s not enough to just survive something, right?

“Like that’s not the point of life. You’ve got to thrive, you’ve got to feel happy.’ Her words tailed away as she tried to hold back the tears. It ended the Sussexes’ oh-so-promising tour of Southern Africa on a sad note.”
