Premier League winner Danny Simpson makes boxing debut as bout ends in draw

Premier League star Danny Simpson narrowly avoided having to give back his 2016 winner’s medal after drawing his boxing debut last night.

Simpson faced off against FIFA streamer Danny Aarons in the main event of Misfits Boxing 17 in Dublin on Saturday night. The ex-Leicester right-back only took up the fight six weeks ago when Aarons’ original opponent withdrew.

Despite the last-minute nature of the match, Simpson agreed to hand over his Prem winners’ medal to Aarons if he was defeated.

However, the match ended in a draw after Aarons made a comeback from a slow beginning. Simpson managed to secure the first two two-minute rounds, but his adversary arguably claimed the third and fourth.

One judge declared the fight a draw while the other two each favoured a different fighter.

During the tense fight, Aarons was left momentarily unrecognisable after a brutal hook from Simpson smashed into his face.

Throughout the match the pair both managed to trade some wild blows, fighting right up until the final bell with officials unable to split them.

“I’m obviously going to say that I thought I nicked it but this week has been one of the craziest weeks of my life,” Simpson said after the final bell.

He added: “We said we were going to have fun in here and I think we did. I think Danny knows I tried to jump in last minute and tried to do everything I could in the five weeks. Maybe I’ll have the chance to have a full camp and I’d love to come back and have another go.”

Aarons, a staunch Spurs fan, commented: “A draw.. it is what it is, we’ll run it back. Thank you to everyone who came out. It was a pleasure to get in the ring, there’s a lot to learn from this, hopefully I can come back with a knockout and with a win.”

There were some other thrilling encounters on the Misfits boxing night as Anthony Taylor triumphed over Gabe Silva in the main spectacle, while Deen The Great delivered a similar fate to Conor McGregor’s mate Dave Fogarty.
