Man Utd flop ‘supplied largest contract in membership’s historical past’ surpassing rival

Manchester United flop Anthony Martial could be set for a record-breaking move to Greek heavyweights AEK Athens.

The French forward, who’s currently without a club following his departure from Old Trafford, has been linked with lucrative moves to Saudi Arabia and the US. However, it seems the former £44m man might have another option – the Greek Super League.

According to reports, AEK Athens are keen on signing Martial for the upcoming season and are ready to splash the cash to secure his services. The striker was previously earning £250k per week with United in the Premier League.

While the exact figure of the proposed wage in Greece hasn’t been disclosed, it’s expected to be substantial. As reported by Sport24 via The Sun, AEK is prepared to make Martial the highest-paid player in the club’s history.

This would surpass the earnings of current top earner and ex-Tottenham star Erik Lamela. Interestingly, this could lead to an awkward reunion between Martial and Lamela, following a notorious incident in 2020 when Martial was sent off for hitting Lamela during Spurs‘ 6-1 victory at Old Trafford, reports the Mirror.

AEK Athens chief Panagiotis Kone has reportedly been in London buddying up with Chelsea for talks about striker David Datro Fofana, and could be angling for United flop Martial too. Meanwhile, Lille president Olivier Letang downplayed links to the striker.

He told DAZN: “Contacts with Martial? No. Absolutely none. I’m not in the habit of stockpiling players. We have Jonathan David, Mohamed Bayo, and Matias Fernandez-Pardo. That’s already three solutions for one position.”

Martial’s stint at Man United left fans frustrated. The forward’s time at Old Trafford racked up 317 games and netted 90 goals over eight years, after joining from Monaco to much fanfare and expectation.

Heading for sunnier climes, Martial could join the ever-growing club of ex-Prem hotshots heading to Greece. Former Chelsea, Arsenal and Fulham winger Willian’s already blazed the trail, sealing the deal with Olympiacos.

The sprightly Brazilian has apparently scribbled his John Hancock on a lush £100k-a-week, one-year deal. Willian, now 36, gave the thumbs down to another Fulham contract.
