The Met Office has issued an urgent warning for households to stockpile six essential items ahead of heavy rain storms tonight.
Parts of southern England and Wales are bracing for potential flooding as up to 50mm of rain is forecasted to fall within a two-hour period in certain areas. As a result, a yellow weather warning has been put into effect from 9pm tonight (Wednesday) until Thursday at 9am.
The official statement from the Met Office reads: “Heavy showers, perhaps thundery, are possible in places on Wednesday night into Thursday morning. There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds.”

In preparation for the heavy rainfall and potential flooding, the Met Office has advised residents to consider assembling an emergency flood kit containing six crucial items.
These six items form the basis of an emergency flood kit, which is recommended for households across London, Southeast England, Southwest England and other regions.
The items are:
- First-aid kit
- Torch with spare batteries
- Waterproof clothes
- Bottled water
- Wind-up radio
- Insurance documents
A spokesman said: “Think about putting together an emergency flood kit with essential items that will help you cope in a flood, including: Insurance documents and list of contact numbers; torch and spare batteries; first-aid kit and any prescription medicines; warm waterproof clothes and blankets; bottled water and snacks; battery or wind-up radio and if it applies to you: supplies for looking after your baby or pet. Make sure that everyone knows where to find this kit and what to do if flooding happens.”
