Tom Kerridge’s Fish and Chips slammed by dissatisfied buyer

Tom Kerridge‘s fish and chips has met criticism after a disappointed customer said they found their food ‘leaking’ water.

Food content creator James Dimitri, from London, took to Kerridge’s Fish and Chips, inside luxury department store Harrods in London, where a portion of Cornish brill with chips can set diners back a whopping £52, while lobster can cost up to £80.

James shared his experience on TikTok as part of his ‘tourist trap’ review series and claimed that a trip to the restaurant was not worth the money, saying the fish was ‘leaking water all over the plate’.

Despite a famous TV chef heading the joint, James struggled to come to terms with the cost of his meal, which after a portion of fish and chips, a bread roll and two beers, totted up to £70.

The video caused a storm online and garnered over one million views in less than a week of it being posted, with one viewer saying: ‘As much as I like Tom Kerridge, he won’t be seeing me anywhere near there.

MailOnline has contacted Tom Kerridge’s representatives for comment.

The restaurant’s menu boasts the £37 ‘market day fish’, which is ‘caught from day boats in Cornwall’ and ‘coated in Kerridge’s gluten-free batter, and served with chips, Matson curry sauce, tartare sauce and pease pudding’.

James said: ‘Northerners, look away now. Hell, Londoners, look away too. I went to Harrod’s to try Tom Kerridge’s £37 fish and chips.’

To kick the meal off, James ordered a beer, saying: ‘First of all, even the cheapest beer was £9.50.’

He continued: ‘Here’s the fish and chips, it comes with a total of nine whole chips as well as a curry sauce, pea puree, and tartare.

‘The batter was nice and crispy, and fish seemed fresh, but the fish was small, and it kept leaking loads of water all over the plate. Non-stop leakage.

‘The chips were nice but not elite. I also paid £6 for a bread roll to make a little chip butty. This was pretty good but probably set me back a tenner after adding two chips.’

The food content creator concluded: ‘Was it worth it? No. It’s got a 3.3 Google for a good reason.’

He added in the caption: ‘Tourist Trap reviews are back, baby. I went to Kerridge’s Fish & Chips by @cheftomkerridge at @harrods. Fish & chips with a bread roll and two beers cost me £70.’

Viewers flocked to the comment section to share their thoughts on the video. One said: ’37 quid, [I] would expect to be taken out on a boat to watch the fish get caught myself for that price’.

A second said: ‘Get yourself to Whitby and buy some proper ones for real about £8.50! You’re welcome’.

‘There’s too much sauce for how many chips there are. Need at LEAST triple the amount of chips,’ said another.

A fourth added: ‘I don’t get how these posh restaurants charge a fortune and give you nine chips… I think people think it tastes better when it costs more.’

A fifth said: ‘Absolutely scandalous I couldn’t bring myself to pay that kind of money for fish and chips. Northern girl here.’

Once considered to be a humble supper for Brits, new figures have shown the alarming price rise of one of the nation’s favourite takeaway choices.

Whether you enjoy wrapped in newspaper overlooking the sea on a sunny summer’s evening or at home on a cold winter night, the average price for a chippy tea has skyrocketed to over £10, according to new data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

The ONS said that the estimated average price for a takeaway portion of fish and chips was £9.88 in July this year –  a hike of 52 per cent compared with £6.48 in July 2019.

It means the cost of a fish supper has risen higher in percentage terms than other go-to options for Brits, including a takeaway pizza, along with an Indian or Chinese main course.

The cost of a kebab – many people’s option to soak up a heavy drinking session – increased by 44 per cent from £5.24 to £7.57.

Fans of fried chicken and chips will now have to fork out an average of 42 per cent more for a meal, as prices over the last five years have skyrocketed from £4.73 to £6.70.

Viewers took to the comment section to share their thoughts on the video, and many were surprised

Meanwhile, the average cost of a pizza has jumped to over £10, now setting customers back £10.08 compared to £8.06 in 2019.

Elsewhere, main courses from both Indian and Chinese restaurants rose by 29 per cent.

While the cost-of-living crisis has seen food prices increase across the UK, British chippies have been hit particularly hard by extreme weather conditions affecting the quality of potato harvests.

Most supermarkets have already shrunk potato pack sizes from 2.5kg to 2kg without any decrease in price. The net effect is a hidden cost hike to shoppers of around 25 per cent per kilo.

Last year, several retailers restricted purchases of fresh produce, including tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers, after extreme weather hit producers in Europe.

Stores will look to avoid a repeat for UK vegetables by importing more, which will in turn push up prices.

In addition to being the priciest takeaway item over a five-year period, the cost of fish and chips has also been enormous in the short-term.

Figures tracking the cost of the meal from from March 2022 to March 2023 showed that it had soared by 19 per cent.

Data over the same period revealed a 13 per cent average increase in the price of fast food and takeaway services.
