Britain’s most ‘disappointing’ seashores – with vacation favourites making the listing

A list of the most disappointing beaches in the UK has placed some holiday favourites among the most ‘meh’ beaches in Blighty.

It’s estimated around 1,500 beaches dot the Britain’s coastline. While some are described as stunning, many others fail to impress.

Hidden Gems UK carried out a study to rank the top ten ‘most disappointing’ beaches in the UK using a combination of one, two and three-star TripAdvisor reviews, and here they are.

1 North Shore Beach, Llandudno

North Shore Beach in Llandudno snagged the title of the UK’s ‘most disappointing’ beach, leaving a bunch of visitors totally underwhelmed.

One tourist who wasn’t impressed wrote: “This used to be a gorgeous sandy beach providing a stunning coast for visitors who flock here every year, but now it’s just a long bay filled with stone, pebbles and boulders, so it can’t really be enjoyed as a beach typically would, and it’s just an eyesore.”

They also moaned about the local council, adding: “Very disappointing that the council wouldn’t invest in adding a new sandy area for visitors.

2 Morecambe Beach, Lancashire

Next on the list, was Morecambe Beach in Lancashire. One recent review said the beach’s glory days had “long gone”.

The review continued: “Sadly Morecambe is a run down seaside resort with only echoes of its former glory. The promenade is nice wide and well designed with interesting features and the bay looks pretty with little boats fitted around. However the sand is really muddy and the place has lots of litter and rodents.

“The road along the prom has lots of caravans/ campers parked I thought they had parked there to camp all night. The fairground area looks very overgrown. The beach front businesses, cafes etc were all closed even on a Saturday morning in August.

3 Weston-super-Mare Beach, Somerset

Despite being popular with tourists, one dissapoineted vistor described Somerset’s Weston-super-Mare Beach as tired and run down.

They said: “Very disappointed, thought it was very tired and run down. Many of the buildings need painting, especially the winter gardens pavilion, a lovely old building. Lack of flowers. Promenade was clean, shame about all the large plastic bins on display along the promenade. Poundland and other type shops. Wells a much prettier place.”

4 Blackpool Sands, Lancashire

It’s perhaps not a surprise Blackpool has made the most disappointing beach list. One vistitor, who gave it a one-star review, highlighted the irony in the name.

They wrote: “It looks absolutely beautiful. But then you get there and find there is no sand, just shingle, and your 3 year old granddaughter hates it. And so do you.

5 Brighton Beach, East Sussex

A beach that divides people into lovers and haters, Brighton Beach was fifth on the list. A recent two-star review caned the beach, saying it was “overrated and run down.”

They also complained that the beach had London prices, but was a “Skegness experience”, adding: “the place is a real dump”.

6 West Wittering Beach, Sussex

This crowd-pleaser coastal haunt is a shock entry on the list, with one visitor saying the beach “wasn’t worth the stress”.

Leaving a one-star review, the person complained about the “gridlock” when trying to leave the car park, and the staff who “appear to know there’s a problem but refuse to address it just want to take the money”. They added that the day was very stressful and will “100% avoid this beach in the future”.

7 Formby Beach, Liverpool

It may be dog friendly and sandy, but Liverpool’s Formby Beach was described as “dirty and disgusting” in a recent TripAdvisor review, left by a person who will never return to the beach.

They added that the dunes have “piles of rubbish, particularly plastic and glass drink bottles” and it is “no better: on the beach, with the shore “full of litter clearly hazardous to marine life”.

8 Skegness Beach, Lincolnshire

Perhaps low on the list because people already have low expectations of Skegness Beach, one person described the place as “absolutely vile”.

They added that “the people are rough” and that their nephew was “threatened” and “accosted” by a group of men. They added that despite previously finding Skegness “quite pleasant”, they “will never return”.

9 Camber Sands, Sussex

A popular holiday spot, Camber Sands is a surprise entry in ninth place. A family recently described the place as “just awful”, and gave the beach one star.

They added there was “dirt and rubbish everywhere toilets were absolutely disgusting”. The family also had trouble leaving the beach, as two fights broke out in the car park. They added: “This used to be a lovely place to come.”

10 Blackpool Beach, Lancashire

Last on the list, Blackpool Beach was labeled as “very disturbing” by a family who recently visited and advised others “don’t go”. The review painted a bleak picture of derelict streets and called it “crackhead junkie prostitute land”.

The review read: “Has to be the worst seaside town on the northwest worse than Morecambe boarded up hotels on front and crack heads. The front is a total mess. The trams run only a couple of times an hour. It’s like some apolyptic hell.

“I’ve never been so shocked. Walk off the front and it’s a war zone burnt out houses boarded up houses junkies prostitutes smell of skunk everywhere.”

While some of the entries on the list will surprise no one, Brits have defended other beaches.

On social media, one person wrote that Camber Sands was “one of the best beaches” they had been to, while another I’ve been to.

People also jumped to defend Formby Beach, with one person saying they were “not sure why it made the list”. Another person agreed with them, saying: “Formby is a clean, beautiful beach!”

Another person commented that it is “cool to hate Blackpool” and that the town has “peaceful and tranquil” beach walks “for miles”.

A fifth person asked, “What’s wrong with Skegness beach?”, before adding the list was “done by snobs”.
