Met Office warns Brits to ‘cost telephones’ and unplug landline amid horror floods

Brits have been warned to charge their phones and unplug landlines amid heavy rain.

Weather boffins at the Met Office said some areas of the UK could be affected by flooding and urged people to prepare accordingly.

The Met Office said: “Check the flood advice in your area to know when and where flooding will happen. Charge mobile phone devices. People cope better with power cuts when they have prepared for them in advance and it’s easy to do. The essentials that could help you cope with a power cut are: battery candles, torches and batteries, a mobile phone power pack.

  • A yellow weather warning is in place until this evening

“Lightning can cause power surges, unplug any non-essential appliances if not already using a surge protector.

“Telephone lines can conduct electricity so try to avoid using the landline, unless in an emergency.

“If your power goes out these simple steps can help you deal with the situation: Switch off all electrical appliances that shouldn’t be left unattended, ready for when the power comes back on.

“Leave a light on, so you know when the power cut has been fixed.

“Check to see if your neighbours are safe and if they have a power cut too. If they have power, your trip switch may have activated.”

A yellow weather warning is in place across the south of England and into parts of the Midlands and north including Nottingham, Lincoln, Sheffield and Doncaster. South Wales is also affected with the warning covering areas as far north as Welshpool.

The warning was put in place from 9pm on Saturday and will last until 6pm today.

The Met Office said there is a “lower chance that a few spots within the warning area could see 80-100 mm of rain by the end of Sunday which may fall in a fairly small period of time”.

Other areas can expect to see 40-60 mm of rain and other areas less than 10mm.

Currently, the Environment Agency has issued 18 flood alerts including areas in Cornwall, Exmouth, Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire. The most recent warning was issued for Bottle Brook in Derbyshire where “Small, flashier rivers and streams may respond to heavy rainfall as a result of localised thunderstorms passing through the area.”
