As September, the month with the highest number of birthdays, draws near, many are gearing up for an influx of birthday cake and the challenge of keeping leftovers fresh.
Vlatka Lake, a storage expert at Space Station, shared some tips with Express.co.uk on how to preserve the taste and texture of your cake for as long as possible. She also revealed why it’s a bad idea to store cake in the fridge.
“There are a few different ways to effectively store cake, and it typically depends on the type of cake and ingredients,” the expert explained.
“In most cases, the general rule applies in which your cake should be kept at room temperature and in a cake tin for short-term storage, avoiding plastic containers when possible.”
For those looking to store their cake for a longer period, freezing is the best option, according to Lake. To keep your cake fresh for an extended period, wrap it tightly in plastic wrap or tin foil, or place it in a freezer-safe container before storing it in the freezer.
When you’re ready to enjoy a slice, allow the cake to thaw at room temperature, and ensure you have space on your countertop for it to defrost properly.
“Freezing can keep your cake fresh and safe to eat for up to 6 months, depending on the ingredients,” added Lake.
