New statue of Queen Elizabeth II mocked for wanting like extra ‘Mrs Doubtfire’

A new sculpture of the late Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip hasn’t gone down too well. The design has come under fire from the public saying they look completely different to reality.

In the statue, the Queen is dressed in a quilted jacket and tartan skirt with her iconic handbag over her arm. Philip is kitted out in what became his usual suit.

A pair of corgis join them in Northern Ireland’s Antrim Castle Gardens on Sunday. The statue was created by Anto Brennan, a Northern Irish artist, but social media followers believed it looked like Mrs Doubtfire.

Locals were outraged at the statue and suggested the artist needed their eyes tested. The prince and the dogs look somewhat realistic, but the confusion lies in the appearance of the bronze queen.

Facebook fans flocked to the site and couldn’t help but draw comparisons between the statue and Mrs Doubtfire, played by Robin Williams in the movie. Someone commented underneath the photo: “Looks more like Mrs Doubtfire than our late Queen.”

“At least the dogs look good” wrote a second, while another added: “Think you need to ask Temu for your money back.” While some found the humour, others thought it could be offensive towards the late members of the royal family.

“Both need removed and melted down and redone. That’s actually offensive,’ said a user. Others added: “Definitely not the tribute she deserved’ and suggested it was an ‘insult’ to the Queen.

“Absolutely beyond dreadful. It looks utterly ridiculous,” penned an enraged user. Several social media fans said Philip looked good, but the Queen needed a lot of work.

The photo was first shared on Facebook by the local council. They captioned it: “The sculpture captures Her Majesty in a dignified pose, reflecting her grace, steadfastness and lifelong dedication to public service.

The statue gained plenty of attention on social media

“One of the first of its kind in the UK, the sculpture was created to commemorate Her Late Majesty who passed away two years earlier, on 8 September 2022. It fittingly stands adjacent to the statue of her beloved husband, Prince Philip on display at the Parterre Garden within Antrim Castle Gardens for the public to enjoy.

“To complete the scene, the royal couple is joined by two of the more than 30 dogs that Her Majesty owned during her lifetime.”
