Fury as police freed teenage knife thug earlier than he killed pensioner

A teenage thug freed by police after slashing a shop-keeper killed a pensioner only half an hour later.

The 15-year-old punched Patrick Colquhoun, 70, who fell and suffered a fatal injury on April 12 this year.

Earlier the same day, the boy had struck Nadeen Mohammed with a blade after an incident at the 65-year-old’s off-sales.

The teenager – who cannot be identified due to his age – yesterday appeared at the High Court in Glasgow.

He pleaded guilty to the culpable homicide of Mr Colquhoun on Victoria Road in Glasgow’s Govanhill area and assaulting Mr Mohammed to his injury.

The teenager will be sentenced next month. He is currently detained at a secure unit.

The attack on Mr Mohammed occurred after the boy and a friend had gone to the store in Govanhill around 4pm. They demanded the shopkeeper and his son ‘come outside’. Instead, the men told them to leave.

Mr Mohammed then followed them before there was an altercation. Prosecutor Angela Gray, KC, said: ‘The boy removed a knife from the waistband of his trousers and made a slashing motion towards Mr Mohammed, striking him on the arm.’

The man ended up needing stitches for a wound.

The boy was arrested that night. Miss Gray said: ‘At 11.15pm, he was released from police custody.’

Around the same time, Mr Colquhoun had left his local bar the Queen’s Park Cafe to visit a nearby takeaway.

After collecting his food, Mr Colquhoun, who lived in the city’s Pollokshields, was seen standing beside a car rented by the boy’s father.

CCTV then captured the teenager coming into the street and accusing the OAP of urinating at the car.

Miss Gray added: ‘A witness saw the boy go towards Mr Colquhoun and punch him on the head.’

The victim struck his head on the road as he hit the ground.

Trial judge Lord Harrower deferred sentence for background reports until October 18 in Edinburgh.

He ordered the boy to remain in the secure unit until then.
