Final lap collision at Azerbaijan GP sees F1 stars Sainz and Perez crash out

A huge collision between F1 drivers Carlos Sainz and Sergio Perez crash out of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix on the final lap.

Heading into the closing stages of the race in Baku, Ferrari’s Sainz and Red Bull’s Perez were battling it out for a podium place, with McClaren’s Oscar Piastri leading the way in front of Charles Leclerc of Ferrari. But, with just a single lap left in the race, a huge coming together between Sainz, who was in third, and Perez, saw both drivers crash out.

Perez had been trying to chase down Leclerc in second but heading into turn 1 of the penultimate lap, the former was passed by Sainz, leaving the two Ferrari’s in second and third place going into the second turn. However, Sainz and Perez then ended up crashing into a wall on the streets of Baku.

Replay showed there was contact between Perez’s front right tire and Sainz’s back left tire, which caused the crash. On the team radio, both drivers were left bemused by how they had seemingly gone from in the points to not being able to finish the race.

“Is he crazy or what? I can’t f***ing believe it,” said Perez. “What happened there? What happened? I don’t get it,” Sainz said.

In the end, the race finished under a yellow flag, meaning Piastri went on to win the race in Baku. The crash also saw Leclerc wrap up second place, while it also saw Mercedes driver George Russell somehow make it onto the podium in third.
