Inside Andy Murray’s life away from tennis – break up from spouse to brotherly feud

Sir Andy Murray‘s life off the tennis court has been as eventful as his time on it.

The three-time Grand Slam champion has faced numerous trials and tribulations, but he’s earned every bit of joy in his retirement from the sport. His brother Jamie also boasts an impressive career, having clinched seven Grand Slam titles in doubles and mixed doubles.

Meanwhile, Andy has firmly established himself as one of the greatest male tennis players ever, with a whopping 46 titles under his belt, including two Wimbledon titles and one US Open championship, plus two Olympic gold medals.

Despite their triumphs, the brothers have had to overcome various hurdles, both on and off the court. Andy has been open about his personal life, including his marriage and family. Here’s all you need to know about the man behind the racket, from his staggering net worth to his very public spats with his brother.

Andy, one of the most successful tennis players of his generation, has accumulated over £50million in prize money thanks to his glittering career, reports the Express.

Away from the court, he’s also made significant earnings through endorsement deals and sponsorships with big hitters like Jaguar, Castore, Under Armour, and Head. He’s teamed up with other major brands such as Amazon Prime Video, Standard Life, and American Express over the years.

This has resulted in an estimated net worth of around £85 million, according to Celebrity Net Worth, although some sources suggest it could be closer to £100 million.

The tennis star is known not just for his prowess on the court, but also for his savvy investments. The sportsman resides in a luxurious mansion in Oxshott, Surrey, which set him back over £5m back in 2009.

Besides relishing wins and acing serves, Murray has pocketed profits from flipping properties, including selling a flat in Miami. He’s even ventured into hospitality, snapping up the sumptuous Cromlix House hotel near his native Dunblane for a cool £1.8m in 2014.

Love too has been grand for Murray since tying the knot with Kim Sears, the daughter of tennis coach Nigel Sears, after first crossing paths at the US Open soiree in 2005. Publicly cheered on by Sears a year following their first encounter, Murray dashed through the excited crowd to lock lips with her as he celebrated a tournament win under the Californian sun.

Meanwhile, Murray hasn’t kept the personal side of his life off the court. Previously chatting on This Morning with Alison Hammond, the doting dad of four, Sophia, Edie, Teddy, and Lola, joked that getting all the kids tucked into bed punctually was akin to netting a grand slam title.

Despite a successful marriage to Kim, who frequently grabs the spotlight herself, their journey has seen its share of difficulty. The pair briefly parted ways in 2009, before reconciling within half a year.

Sears is often seen rallying support for her husband from match to match, but she really turned heads with her impassioned fervour; a particular episode caught on camera during Wimbledon 2015 saw her serve up a volley of expletives: “F****** have that you flash Czech f***” directed towards Tomas Berdych, igniting a media frenzy.

Upon receiving his knighthood, Murray couldn’t help but joke about the respectful behaviour expected now that Kim would become a Lady. He quipped: “She’s going to have to [do] no more swearing during my matches any more, for any of you who saw that a few years ago,” referencing the infamous incident with a chuckle.

Murray has openly admitted to moments of selfishness towards his loved ones due to the pressures of professional sports. His career was temporarily sidelined by a hip injury, which added stress to their marriage.

However, he has been vocal in praising Kim’s unwavering support during those challenging times, describing her as “brilliant” for her strength and resilience.

“I was pretty down, that’s for sure,” he confessed. “It was a really tough period for me because it wasn’t so much the actual injury itself. Being injured can be frustrating, but the issue that I had was with me every single day, sleeping and walking. It wasn’t just I hit a serve and my arm hurt. This woke me up in the night. It was bad.

“I don’t know if the children noticed because when I’m with them I’m always trying to put on a brave face, but my wife definitely. It put a lot of strain on our relationship, just because I was down all the time,” he continued. “She has been brilliant and I would probably be quite selfish, just in terms of thinking about myself and how I’m feeling all the time and not actually realising the impact that has on all the people around me.”

Murray has always been tight with his brother Jamie, who’s a year and three months older than him. But even the closest of siblings can clash, especially when they’re both elite sportsmen.

The Murray brothers hit a rough patch in 2008 when Andy pulled out of the Davis Cup tie against Argentina, worried about making his knee injury worse. Jamie, who teamed up with Ross Hutchins instead, was fuming over Andy’s call, which didn’t help the team avoid defeat.

Jamie didn’t mince words about it, saying: “It kind of affects the way we feel about him,” and “I think it’s disappointing he chose not to come. From what I have been reading he hasn’t come out and said he’s injured, it’s more a prevention thing. I think if he had really wanted to push himself he could have come here for the match.

“It was a shock for me and for the team. I was not aware he had a problem. From his point of view, I guess he doesn’t have anything to apologise for as he’s taken the decision not to come.”

Jamie added: “If he had come here, he would have caused them problems because he has the ability to win singles matches, he’s a world-class player. He’s been in the top 10 and not by fluke. I think he would have liked to come here and had the crowd against him, he plays better in those circumstances.”

Andy swiftly hit back at his brother’s comments, saying: “It was a little bit disappointing. But he obviously felt pretty strongly about it and he’s entitled to his opinion. If he knew what it was like playing three five-set matches in a row on clay then maybe he’d understand my position a little bit better.

“I’ve not spoken to him yet. I’ll see him soon. I guess we’ll have to have a chat about it and just discuss our feelings on Davis Cup and the sort of position that I am in, but it’s probably not going to be the most fun conversation to have with your brother.”

The brothers eventually put their differences aside after a two-week rift.
