‘McIlroy is starring in his personal horror film – he cannot deal with the stress’

Rory McIlroy must feel like he’s starring in his own horror movie.

You know the script. He’s cruising down the back nine on Sunday en-route to winning a big tournament. Before making fatal errors on two of his last four holes, to gift the trophy to someone else.

Back in June at the US Open, McIlroy stumbled to allow Bryson DeChambeau to pip him to the post.

And last weekend back home in his beloved Northern Ireland, McIlroy did the same again to allow Rasmus Hojgaard to win the Irish Open.

His caddie, Harry Diamond, must have a sore hand, considering how much time he spends giving McIlroy a consoling pat on the back as he trudges off the 18th green.

It’s becoming a regular and alarming theme for McIlroy, who also blew a chance to win Olympic gold in Paris this summer.

Those who can’t finish the job in sport become known as ‘chokers’.

Which might sound harsh, considering McIlory has won four Majors and 43 tournaments on the PGA and European Tours.

But recent evidence points to the simple fact that when the pressure is on, McIlroy can no longer handle it.
