Death Row chef who cooked for a whole lot shares purpose he refused to serve one lag

A Death Row chef who waited on hundreds of lags sentenced to die refused to cook one man his last meal.

Brian Price is known as the ‘Death Row chef’ and has served 218 final meals for men facing the death penalty, having served as an inmate at Texas Huntsville Prison for 15 years himself.

Before he was incarcerated, Price was a musician and photographer but in 1989 was sent to prison for assaulting his ex-wife and kidnapping his brother-in-law. He was swiftly put to work in the kitchens, cooking hundreds of meals.

But there was one convict Price refused to take to the hobs for because of a reported “personal connection” to the man.

According to the Daily Express, Price knew of Leopoldo Narvais Jr, who was sentenced to death and up for a final meal. Narvais Jr was convicted of four counts of capital murder in 1998. All of his victims were girls aged 11 and 19, and some were daughters of Price’s friends.

Sickened by Narvais Jr’s actions, Price handed his skillet pan to someone else to undertake Death Row meal duties.

Speaking to the Guardian in 2004, Price said he’d once cheffed for a man who’d shot someone in a convenience shop. Although the killer had requested a “fillet mignon”, Price could only do a T-bone steak which the bloke reportedly liked anyway.

Price said: “That blew me away. I went back to my cell that night, and I really reflected upon it and that was probably the last thanks that guy gave anyone before he left this world.”

These days, inmates in Texas are denied Death Row dinners because of the actions of one rebellious lag who in 2011 ordered a feast but refused to eat any of it.

Speaking about the ban, Price said: “We should not get rid of the last meal. Justice is going to be served when this person is executed, but can we not show our softer side? Our compassionate side?”
