Oleksandr Usyk detained by airport police earlier than flying to the UK for AJ bout

Oleksandr Usyk has been detained by police at Krakow airport ahead of jetting to the UK.

The heavyweight champion of the world, 37, had been due to be in attendance at Wembley as Anthony Joshua and Daniel Dubios meet between the ropes on Saturday. However, he was seen being led away by uniformed men in Poland on Tuesday evening.

The reason for his arrest is unclear, according to The Mirror. Ukrainian politician Zhan Beleniuk said on social media: “Oleksandr Usyk was arrested at Krakow airport. The circumstances are being clarified.”

Footage that has circulated online appeared to show Usyk being led away by two uniformed officers.

Usyk’s wife, Kate, has attempted to ease fears over the incident on social media. And she posted on her Instagram story, attempting to offer an explanation: “Everything is ok, everything is fine!!! Alexander will explain everything later!!! nothing to be criminal…Good night to you all!!!”

Usyk is due back in the ring later this year for a highly anticipated rematch with Tyson Fury – who he bested earlier this year. Saudi Arabia will host the rematch, as the Gypsy King looks to be undo the one blemish in his copybook.

The champ is already in a camp ahead of the bout, and he said earlier this month: “Now we have started, we’re going to the training camp.

“From the last fight with Tyson Fury, I learned a lot about him, a lot of the things that I saw in the fight I didn’t see on TV with all the fights that I saw of Tyson Fury.

“So we will prepare even better and God willing, with God’s victory, we will show our best shape again. I have incredible motivation. I’m often told that I’ve done everything, what is next, there is nothing further. But we just work every day, every day is a new day.”
