England legend had ‘stinker’ throughout ‘dentist chair’ booze bender earlier than Euro 96

England’s infamous dentist chair has gone down in footballing folklore.

However, it might not be the best of memories for David Seaman, who turned 61 on Thursday, who admitted he had a “stinker”. Ahead of Euro 96, Seaman might have found himself on the front pages of the tabloids alongside Teddy Sheringham, Paul Gascoigne and Steve McManaman.

In what is quite possibly the most famous night out in English football history – or even sport as a whole – Gascoigne and many other England stars found themselves in the eye of a media storm rarely seen before.

The alcohol soaked Three Lions looked like they had been mauled by three lions as their shirts were ripped to pieces, hanging onto their bodies by a mere thread or two.

From humiliation at the hands of mildly amusing puns such as ‘disgracefools’, to complete dressing downs from pundits and ex-players alike, the England stars endured a barrage unlike no other. But a lucky Seaman completely missed all of the shenanigans because he was put into sleep mode by his own football club.

“No, I had a stinker,” Seaman said to the Tubes and Ange Golf Life podcast, when asked if he was at the one appointment with a dentist chair some wouldn’t want to miss. “We played the game and it was against the Hong Kong pub eleven or something and we won it about 20-0.

“We went back to the hotel and we were like ‘right, meet down in reception in about half an hour’. I go to my room, have a shower, and as I put the telly on I realised it was Arsenal vs Sheffield Wednesday cup final replay and I was like ‘oh I’ll have a little watch of this’.

“The next thing, I woke up in the morning and that was it – I missed everything. I went down for breakfast and the lads were like ‘oh my god how funny was last night’ and I was like ‘I can’t believe it’.

“Not only did I miss it, I fell asleep watching Arsenal’s cup final with Sheffield Wednesday.” Seaman’s nap is made worse because he competed and won said FA Cup final.

He was between the sticks for the Gunners when they overcame Wednesday in the replay at Wembley.

Ian Wright scored in both legs, before Andy Linighan popped up in the 119th minute of extra time to secure the famous old trophy. Not that this would have been enough to prevent what could be the most poorly timed kip of his career.

Fortunately for Seaman, he would go on to win three more FA Cups for the Gunners.
