Pep Guardiola backs Rodri after Manchester City star threatened to go on strike

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has backed possible strike action from the game’s leading players.

And Guardiola has warned football bosses that the game wouldn’t even exist without its top level stars.

Earlier this week City midfielder Rodri revealed players would be willing to take industrial action and refuse to play if their schedules are not reduced.

Rodri admits the number of games players are being asked take part in has got out of control. The Spanish midfielder fumed: “I think we are close to that. I think it’s the general opinion of the players. And if it keeps [going] this way, there will be a moment where we have no other option.”

Rodri reckons it is taking such a toll on their bodies and mental health, that drastic action is needed to make football’s rules do something about it.

Rodri made 64 appearances for club and country last season – and got so tired he had to ask Pep Guardiola if he could take a break in April.

Guardiola has waded into the debate and told the likes of FIFA, UEFA and the Premier League that players hold the ultimate power.

The City boss said: “I agree that many voices are talking about the players. If something is going to change, it must come from the players. They are the only ones who can change something.

“The business can be without managers, sporting directors, media and owners – but without players you cannot play. They alone have the power to do it.”
