Prince Andrew’s ‘terrifying’ actuality after BBC interview has royals ‘involved

Royal insiders are reportedly feeling jittery following the release of a new drama about Prince Andrew, claims a Royal expert.

Streaming giant Amazon Prime’s A Very Royal Scandal does no favours for Andrew in its portrayal of his dismal Newsnight interview. The Daily Mail’s Royal Editor Rebecca English stated that Andrew “comes across as the most obnoxious individual you would ever have the misfortune to meet”.

Talking on the Palace Confidential podcast, colleague Jo Elvin noted: “A lot of us have this assumption that Andrew is impervious to public perception but it must affect him in some ways.”

Royal pundit Charlotte Griffiths has given the lowdown on Andrew’s reaction to his infamous “car crash” interview, indicating he was hit by a bout of depression post-interview and slinked off to bed, although he seemed to later recover his zest, reports the Scottish Daily Express.

Charlotte went on to say: “Recently I’ve been hearing that he’s going through quite a low stage, and actually some of the family get quite worried about him. It’s kind of a terrifying thing to be completely and utterly hauled over the calls in front of the whole nation.”

A Very Royal Scandal airs the interview shambles from the angle of Newsnight presenter Emily Maitlis, but Rebecca remarks that “there’s quite a lot from the heart of Buckingham Palace and also Royal Lodge”.

The latest drama to hit the screens paints a gloomy picture of Prince Andrew post his infamous interview. Yet, in a twist, episode two shows him praising Emily Maitlis for her efforts.

Michael Sheen, stepping into the shoes of the troubled Duke, remarks: “I am most grateful for the opportunity. Obviously it was a risk but I felt it [was good]. Thank you, Emily.”

The series also explores the repercussions for Andrew’s private secretary Amanda Thirsk, who was shown the door after setting up the notorious chat.

Joanna Scanlan brings to life the moment Thirsk is reprimanded by the Queen’s private secretary, who delivers the harsh news: “I am afraid you’re going to need to step back. We’ll have you sign an NDA and there will be the usual severance package, but as of Monday you no longer work for the Duke of York.”

Despite the dramatised events, BBC sources indicate that the real Amanda Thirsk remains a staunch supporter of Prince Andrew.
