Touching motive boozer closes honouring ‘cherished’ employees member

The Plough, a much-loved Birmingham pub, will be shutting its doors this afternoon, September 21, to let the team pay their respects to a “cherished colleague.”

The Harborne haunt is taking a break from serving pints on Saturday afternoon so staff can get together and celebrate the life of their beloved colleague Lucy Atkins.

Tragically, the youngster was just 20 years old when she got knocked down by a car while out with her dog Simba in June on West Boulevard in Quinton. The accident happened between Barnes Hill and Quinton Road West at around 8.45am on that fateful Monday, June 24.

Lucy, a student, helped out at the Plough during her summer holidays and was a familiar face at the watering hole. Her workmates are devastated and are getting together this afternoon to bid farewell to Lucy in a move locals are calling “beautiful,” BirminghamLive reports.

The boozer shared a heart-wrenching post honouring Lucy to its 10,000 Facebook fans, saying that they’d be closed for a couple of hours today. The Plough shared the news on September 20: “This Saturday 21st September, The Plough will be closed from 2pm – 4pm, so our team can come together to say goodbye to a cherished colleague and dear friend.

“Lucy, along with her beloved dog Simba, died this summer. This weekend, her friends and family will gather to celebrate her life. Lucy had been part of our team for many years and returned to us during her summer break after an incredible first year at university, where true to her nature, she had created friendships and beautiful memories.

“Lucy’s bright spirit, her unwavering optimism, and her gift for making everyone around her feel seen and loved will forever be missed. She truly was part of the Plough family, and we are heartbroken to have lost one of our own so soon.”

“We hope you understand our need to close during this time, as we come together to give Lucy the farewell she truly deserves. Lucy, we miss you deeply-thank you for everything you brought into our lives.

Members of the community as well as loyal customer praised the “beautiful” gesture.

Many shared their memories of Lucy in the comments, describing her as a “happy and positive” person and “wise beyond her years.”

A spokesperson for the force previously said: “We’re particularly interested in hearing from anybody who was travelling in the area and has dash cam footage.
