Brighton & Hove Albion forward Danny Welbeck scored a stunning free-kick against Nottingham Forest on Sunday afternoon.
The former England man has been among the goals this season, registering three strikes – against Everton, Manchester United and now Forest – to go alongside an assist. At 33, it was assumed his best days were behind him, but his resurgence has raised a few eyebrows among fans.
Just before half-time at the Amex, Welbeck stood over a free-kick around 25 yards from goal. He stepped up and whipped the ball powerfully past the Forest wall before Matz Sels stood still, as he could only watch on as the ball nestled into the net to give Brighton a 2-1 lead going in at the break.

The strike was Welbeck’s 70th Premier League goal but surprisingly was the first to come from a direct free-kick. Fans gave their thoughts on X, one said: “Feel like nobody has a conversation about how good this guy actually is, his Brighton era has been class.”
Another added: “No need for Welbeck to be good at free-kicks. He’s good enough already.” With a third saying: “What are they cooking letting Welbeck take free-kicks.”
Brighton boss Fabian Hürzeler spoke about Welbeck recently, he explained: “I don’t see that he is getting old. He’s a role model on and off the pitch – a gentleman with a lot of experience who is taking care of his team-mates, taking care of the culture and environment of the whole club.
“He is helpful in every phase. And on top of that, he is in great shape. Of course there are lots of things where he can improve but I’m very happy with how he’s doing so far.”
The Manchester-born forward boasts an impressive trophy haul from his days at United and Arsenal, winning the Premier League in 2012-13 and two FA Cups at Arsenal, most recently in 2019.
