Keir Starmer joked that he and Larry the Cat have something in common – spending 14 years “chasing the pests out of Downing Street.”
The Prime Minister made the joke at a reception at Labour Party Conference last night – and also quipped about the protest during his speech at the conference last year. “A word of warning,” he told delegates at the Yorkshire reception. “Stay away from the glitter. It is now treason to throw glitter on me, though the prison places are a bit tight at the moment.
“We’ll lock you in the Tower and you don’t want to wake up there.”

Mr Starmer’s speech to Labour conference last year was interrupted by a protester who hurled glitter on him. At the reception, he went on to joke about the impression that he had been “gloomy” since taking office.
“Look at what we’ve already done to start the change,” he said. “We’ve ended the strikes so our doctors are back in operating theatres, getting our NHS going again. We set up the National Wealth Fund to invest in our businesses, our economy and the jobs of the future.
“We have launched GB Energy. We used to talk about it, now we’ve launched it. The next generation of energy will come through GB energy. No Fault Evictions. We said we’d get rid of them – we’re on it, we’ve started that work already.
“We’ve changed planning. Onshore wind ban? Gone. Buses back under local control. And our railways coming back into public ownership under a Labour government.
“Who says we’re gloomy? I’m really enjoying this.”
