UK climate: Cars left beneath water amid vital flooding in England

Forecasters have warned of potential flooding and travel carnage across England today, as some places could see nearly five inches of rain.

An amber weather warning has been in place since 5am and will last until 9pm across Worcester, Birmingham, Nottingham and Hull

Some places could see between 60mm and 80m (2.36in and 3.15in) of rain, and even up to 120mm (4.72in) in some locations, according to the Met Office.

Residents told not to leave their homes

Buckinghamshire Council has advised residents not to leave their homes as a result of flooding.

In a statement, the council revealed how they are currently ‘responding to a high volume of flood related calls’.

As a result, they said: ‘A number of road closures are in force in Bucks; please do not drive unless you have to and if you do go out, take great care & do not try to drive through flood water.’

Making a splash!

Here is a look at what road users are facing in Britain today as rainfall continues to batter parts of the country.

The images below shows car wading through surface water in west London and St. Albans in Hertfordshire.

Bedfordshire heavily impacted by floods

Residents in Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire, revealed they were woken up at 4am to the sound of heavy rainfall as flooding impacted their area.

Firefighters pump water out of homes in Hertfordshire

Pictures show shops and cars left underwater in Hitchin in Hertfordshire. It comes as severe flood warnings were issued for areas near the River Lee and the River Ivel, with a Met Office rain water in place until 23.59 on Monday.

Firefighters can be pumping water out of homes and the road on Woolgrove Road along the River Purwell in Hitchin.

With heavy rain still forecast to fall, other areas in England could be experiencing similar issues.

What should you expect today?

The Met Office has issued a series of points detailing what people should expect from today’s weather.

  • Spray and flooding probably leading to difficult driving conditions and some road closures
  • Homes and businesses may be flooded, causing damage to some buildings
  • Delays and some cancellations to train and bus services are likely
  • A possibility that some communities will be cut off by flooded roads
  • Power cuts and loss of other services to some homes and businesses likely

Amber weather warning UPDATE

The Met Office has issued a further update on the amber and yellow weather warnings in place across the UK today.

It appears the amber warning has shifted slightly towards the south of England.

Now, Milton Keynes, Oxford, Reading, Bath and Gloucester could see heavier rainfall compared to the likes of Birmingham and Hull.

A look at some of the conditions today

As heavy rainfall continues to batter parts of the country, let’s take a look at some of the pictures we have been sent in.

First off, a truck and cyclist were seen trying to navigate their way through a section of partially flooded road in Colliers Wood in South West London.

Earlier this morning, a car could be seen submerged beneath the water in Essex.

Meanwhile, Londoners on their commute to work braved the bad weather using umbrellas to shield themselves.

How many flood warnings are in place today?

As of now, 11 flood warnings are in place in areas including Langford, Luton, Leighton Buzzard and South Ruslip.

However, 75 flood alerts have been issued across the UK in areas where flooding is ‘possible’.

In the last 24 hours, 32 flood warnings have been removed, but it still remains to be seen what the number will be later today.

Tomorrow is expected to bring longer spells of rain to northern areas and parts of Scotland whereas much of the south, Wales and the Midlands should see a largely dry day.

Four London Underground lines were reported to be part-suspended today due to flooding this morning.

The Bakerloo, District, Metropolitan and Piccadilly – in addition to the Overground – have all been affected by the heavy rainfall.

Wet and windy weather is also expected from Wednesday and it will be cooler too, with daytime highs of just 14C (57F) in London by Saturday.

Met Office weather warnings in place today

While most of England and Wales have been put under a yellow weather warning, areas across Worcester, Birmingham, Nottingham and Hull have been put under an amber one.

The Met Office has warned that heavy rain could bring ‘flooding and disruption’ across the country.

It follows a brief period of sunshine and heat earlier this week as summer nears to an end.
