What occurred to ‘worst ever Arsenal keeper’ as damage disaster claims David Raya

Arsenal are sweating on the fitness of goalkeeper David Raya after he went down unchallenged before a goal-kick in the Gunners 2-2 draw with Manchester City.

The two Premier League title contenders played out a thrilling draw on Sunday, with John Stones’ late equaliser for City rescuing Pep Guardiola’s side a point. It was a bitter blow for Arsenal to concede that late, especially when they looked so close to claiming a famous win against City.

But they came away from the Etihad with just a point – and potentially another injury. Raya was seen limping past reporters on Sunday leaving the City stadium with a bandage on his right knee, seemingly in discomfort.

And with Neto, who is on-loan from Bournemouth, already cup-tied, and Tommy Setford, who Arsenal signed from Ajax also seemingly sidelined, it could lead to Arteta naming 16-year-old Jack Porter as their goalkeeper for their Carabao Cup clash later this week against Bolton Wanderers.

However, despite Porter’s age, that might be a better situation for Arteta than the goalkeeper situation he had to deal with back in 2020 when Bernd Leno went down, which forced him to start Alex Runarsson.

Signed by the Gunners in September 2020 from Dijon, Runarsson got his first taste of action for Arsenal in the Europa League when Arteta’s side beat Dundalk 3-0.

But the next game he would feature in would see the Icelandic shotstopper drop two clangers against City in the Carabao Cup. City scored the opening goal of the game through Gabriel Jesus, who easily headed home past Runarsson.

The then-Arsenal keeper, who now plays for Copenhagen, seemingly jumped out of the way of the header too, in what was a rather unfortunate moment for Runarsson.

He was also at fault for City’s second goal, which was a free-kick from Riyad Mahrez. The Algerian winger’s shot was fired straight at Runarsson, but the Icelandic international let the ball squirm between his gloves and into the net in embarrassing fashion.

And after that, Runarsson barely featured for Arsenal again. He made six appearances in total during his time at the Emirates, all of which came during the 2020/21 season.

He went out on loan to join OH Leuven, Alanyaspor and Cardiff City before being released from his Arsenal contract in February 2024 – leading to him joining Copenhagen.
