Desperate pubs make simply 12p a pint in ‘catastrophic’ warning to authorities

Pub industry insiders have warned that boozers are barely making 10p per pint – and that the consequences could be dire.

The British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA) has warned the government that if it doesn’t support the industry, many of the million-plus jobs it provides could be at risk. It has claimed that pubs are making a mere 12p per pint despite the 1,040,000 people reliant on the beer and pub sector for employment.

The BBPA has called on the government to offer a 5% beer duty break in next month’s Autumn Budget, which it claims could create an additional 12,000 jobs, predominantly in pubs. It has been claimed that the upcoming budget is vital for ensuring people stay in work and, it hopes, even create more jobs.

The campaign group commissioned research from Oxford Economics, which found that compared to prior to Covid-19, the number of people working in the sector has jumped 100,000 from 936,000.

The BBPA argues then that the sector is vital for the employment of communities up and down the country.

Emma McClarkin, CEO of the BBPA, said: “Our brewers and pubs are helping people around the country earn money, gain skills and experience, and support both the local and national economy.

“From those pulling pints to the farmers growing the hops, so many rely on our treasured beer and pub sector for their livelihoods and careers.

‌“But for the job market to flourish – and for us to keep supporting those jobs – it’s vital our sector is given the support it needs to continue.

“We are urging the Government [to] protect the Great British brewing and pub sector – the beating heart of our communities – to ensure it can remain a driving force for growth, jobs, investment and social value whilst keeping the price of a pint affordable for all.”

The group also called on the government to ensure 75% business rate relief is protected in the Autumn Budget and warned that additional price increases from a budget that doesn’t allow for such relief would see a number of businesses ‘tip over the edge’.
