Man Utd’s De Ligt proving he’s the ‘new Harry Maguire’ says Old Trafford legend

Paul Scholes has told Matthijs De Ligt he is not that much better than the defender he’s taken the place of at Manchester United.

United made De Ligt one of their main summer signings after landing him from Bayern Munich in a £42.7m deal. The Holland international has replaced Harry Maguire in Erik ten Hag’s starting XI.

But United legend Scholes has told Ten Hag that De Ligt is not much of an upgrade of the England defender he already had at his disposal and could easily do the same job for the Red Devils.

Scholes told The Overlap Fan Debate: “Ten Hag couldn’t wait to get De Ligt instead of Maguire. He was just waiting for the opportunity. I’m not sure it’s that much of an upgrade.

“De Ligt played against Southampton, but Maguire would have been fine against Southampton.

“He might be slightly better, but it’s not a massive improvement where you think, ‘Wow’. It’s like that with all the signings.”

United next face Twente at home in the Europa League on Wednesday, September 25 before hosting Tottenham in the Premier League on Sunday, September 29, before travelling to Porto for the next European fixture on Thursday, October 3.
