UK’s most accident-prone areas revealed as one space pushes NHS to brink

New data has revealed that Brits residing in the North West are putting the most strain on the NHS.

In August 2024, more than 2.1 million Brits made their way to A&E. NHS hospitals in the North West saw nearly 300,000 attendances last month, marking the highest population percentage in the UK. Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust topped the list with the highest attendance of all UK hospitals.

Earlier this year, reports underscored the ongoing struggle faced by emergency departments across the UK, with the NHS still grappling with a severe capacity crisis.

The A&E data was scrutinised by walking aids company Cool Crutches & Walking Sticks, to identify the areas in the UK where Brits are making the most trips to the emergency room. Last month, the North West had the highest percentage rate of A&E attendance per region, 2% higher than the lowest region, the Midlands.

Amelia Peckham, co-founder of Cool Crutches & Walking Sticks, expressed her shock at the number of Brits who attended hospital emergency departments across the UK last month, particularly in the Midlands, attributing it to unfortunate accidents.

A&E figures for August show the true strain on the NHS

“Daft mishaps can lead to life-altering conditions, piling more pressure on our already strained NHS. Tragically, I was involved in a quadbike accident at the tender age of 19, which left me with a spinal cord injury that totally transformed my life. Now, at 36, I still rely on walking aids.”

The full list, in order of those attending A&E in August 2024 is:

North West -298,695

North East and Yorkshire – 336,109

London – 368,311

South East -335,597

East of England -224,018

South West – 224,018
