‘Lay off England gamers’ says Lee Carsley as boss hits again at England critics

Lee Carsley reckons England’s young guns should be appreciated instead of hammered.

Carsley was left shocked at the criticism aimed at himself and his stars following last week’s shock home defeat to Greece at Wembley. The Three Lions bounced back to beat Finland 3-1 in Helsinki on Sunday night.

And Carsley reckons the critics should remember how young and inexperienced the likes of Real Madrid star Jude Bellingham, 21, and company still are.

Interim boss Carsley said: “I’ve enjoyed being with the players. Spending time with them, I mean you’ve seen them play more than me but, when you see them up close, they’re excellent players.

“Some of them, my eldest child is older than a lot of these, and you forget they are young. And the experiences they’re going through, sometimes people only see the player, but they need support.

“They need us to really value them and support them. Jude’s a player I’ve really enjoyed working with. He’s a world-class player, and another one we’re lucky to have.”

England are now second in their Nations League group (League B Group 2) on nine points, with Greece in first on 12. The Three Lions will next face Greece away on November 14, before their last clash against the Republic of Ireland at Wembley on November 17, during the next international break.

The UEFA Nations League has been expanded with a new knockout round to be played in March next year.
