A woman reportedly towering over 6ft was fatally shot by an officer during a welfare check after she attacked him with a knife, slashing his forehead multiple times.
On the morning of September 16, Officer Peter Liu, a 14-year veteran crisis intervention officer, conducted a welfare check on Sydney Wilson, 33, a commercial real estate manager in the Washington, DC area.
After a casual knock on the door by Liu, body cam footage showed Wilson opening it but quickly shutting it again when the officer introduced himself.

Despite the initial rejection, Liu continued to knock for another three minutes until Wilson, widely reported as standing at 6ft 6ins, reopened the door and calmly asked ‘how are you?’ before charging at him with a knife. “Oh Jesus Christ,” exclaimed Liu as he retreated down the hallway, with Wilson following behind, knife still in hand.
The footage then revealed Liu repeatedly instructing Wilson to “back up” while aiming his firearm at her. It is alleged Wilson stabbed the officer in the face multiple times before he discharged his weapon. As Wilson lunged towards him again, Liu fired two shots.
Despite this, Wilson appeared to continue advancing, leading Liu to fire three more rounds before she fell to the ground. The video shows blood pouring from Liu’s head onto his hand and the floor as he reported the shooting and requested backup.
Despite receiving immediate CPR at the scene, Wilson was later pronounced dead from gunshot wounds at a nearby hospital.
Police Chief Kevin Davis stated that Liu did everything he could to prevent the situation from escalating further. “It could have been much, much, much worse; the slash, gash and slash wound he received was at the top of his forehead,” he revealed.
A mental health specialist had requested a welfare check on Wilson, leading to police involvement. Davis acknowledged that such assessments usually involve another mental health specialist.
However, due to their engagement in another call, the usual co-responder was unavailable. Davis believes that the situation could have escalated into a bloodier incident had the doctor not failed to arrive at the scene.
Wilson, an ex-basketball player for Georgetown University, was commemorated on Instagram by her former university. “Georgetown women’s basketball mourns the tragic loss of Sydney Wilson (C’13). Forever a Hoya. ” Meanwhile, Officer Liu remains on administrative leave pending an internal investigation into the shooting, reports the Mirror US.
