‘I used to cheat Liverpool teammates out of cash on the Daily Star crossword’

Footy legend Neil ‘Razor’ Ruddock used to pull a fast one on his Liverpool team-mates by rigging away day Daily Star crossword competitions.

His plot involved secretly calling our helpline for answers, leaving his teammates bemused, so that he could pocket the prize money.

Razor, 56, confessed: “We’d do the Daily Star quickie. We’d take turns to answer and if we couldn’t get it, we’d have to put a tenner in the pot.

“The rest of the lads never realised there was a phoneline you could ring for the answers. I’d sit there with one earphone in and win every week.”

In his new book Toxic, Razor opened up about his booze addiction past and admitted the only puzzle he couldn’t solve was himself.

He added: “At Liverpool, we had Nigel Clough. Not only did Nigel not drink, but on an away trip he used to do his brother’s company accounts. The only numbers we were looking at were on a pack of cards.

“Nigel was a lovely bloke, very funny. He would mix and have a laugh, but doing accounts on the team bus? That was something else.

“Now I can see he was just doing something that worked for him. Maybe it took his mind off the game to come.

“The rest of us? ‘Weirdo’. It showed a lot of strength on his part to do that in front of his teammates and not be bothered about being singled out. At least Nigel was the same as us in that he liked crosswords.

“Except he’d do The Times cryptic and we’d do the Daily Star quickie.”
