Harry Kane has made his first public comments since the news broke that Thomas Tuchel had entered advanced discussions over the England managerial position.

With Gareth Southgate resigning his post at the end of the European Championship this summer – having reached a second successive final – Under-21s boss Lee Carsley was put in interim charge.

With three wins and a defeat in his four competitive matches at the helm, Carsley had been considered a serious contender to take on the role full-time, though he was always going to face competition.

On Tuesday, the news then broke that ex-Chelsea and Bayern Munich boss Tuchel had entered advanced talks with the Football Association over the still vacant position.

Given his status as England captain – and his relationship with Tuchel from their time together last term at Bayern Munich – Kane was understandably faced with questions about the ongoing process, but maintained he knew very little.

Tuchel is in talks with the FA about becoming the permanent successor to Gareth Southgate

England Under 21s boss Lee Carsley has been in interim charge since Southgate’s departure

‘To be honest I haven’t been told anything, so until it’s announced I can’t really comment so we have to wait and see,’ he said, as reported by Sky Sports.

‘Obviously I know Thomas well from last year and (he’s a) fantastic coach, fantastic person, so I’m sure the guys at the FA will contact me when they know more about it.’

Tuchel is open to becoming Gareth Southgate’s long term successor, it is understood, and has been out of work since leaving Bayern Munich last season.

The have have sounded out a number of candidates for the position as England boss, which is currently being held by Carsley on an interim basis.

Talks between Tuchel and the FA are ongoing and could be wrapped up quickly amid interest in the former Chelsea boss from Manchester United, as they consider Erik ten Hag’s position.

Tuchel has a track record of winning titles, which will appeal to the FA, especially after the Three Lions reached back to back finals in the Euros and came up empty-handed on both occasions.

Among others in his bulging trophy cabinet, Tuchel can count the Champions League, Club World Cup, French and German top-flight league titles and domestic cup trophies in England, France and Germany.

Should the German coach be offered the position, Three Lions fans would surely be keen to see whether he can form as lethal a partnership with Kane as he did at Bayern Munich.

Tuchel has emerged as the leading contender to succeed Gareth Southgate, who quit in July

Under Tuchel last term, the former Tottenham striker scored a staggering 44 goals and made 12 assists, though he still finished runner-up to Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga.
