The FA’s decision to appoint a German as England boss will be viewed as sacrilege in some quarters.
It will be an open goal for these people to crawl out from under their rocks to claim such an act of footballing treason should never be allowed to happen.
It will be the same folk who still chant disgusting songs at matches about the war, or denigrate the national anthem with an interjection of cretinous reference to the IRA. There doesn’t appear much we can do to help those from the dark ages.

But back to 2024, it feels fitting the FA have taken a leap of faith in appointing Thomas Tuchel as Gareth Southgate’s successor. It’s how the modern world tends to work.
Such a decision shouldn’t be defined by where the candidate was born. If this was the case, a Scotsman and Spaniard would never have managed Manchester United or Manchester City, respectively.
And look how this turned out? Jurgen Klopp wouldn’t have ended Liverpool’s 30-year wait for the English title, or Irishman Eoin Morgan wouldn’t have captained England to cricket World Cup glory at Lords in 2019.
While was anyone complaining when Sarina Wiegman led the Lionesses to Euros glory in 2022? Tuchel might not be English, but he probably has more respect for our culture than those mentioned at the start of this article.
Interim manager Lee Carsley was right when he said the FA had to appoint the best person for the job, irrespective of where he was from. To argue otherwise is archaic.
Foreign managers have taken charge of England before and failed.
But the list of homegrown ones to have made a horlicks of it is a long one indeed.
