Thomas Tuchel ‘sorry’ he’s not English and has not determined if he’ll sing nationwide anthem

Thomas Tuchel apologised for not being English as he was officially unveiled as the new England manager on Wednesday.

The German also said he had not yet decided whether he will sing the English national anthem after being appointed to succeed Gareth Southgate as England manager.

Speaking at a press conference at Wembley, the 51-year-old vowed to show fans how much he loves being England manager through hard work and results.

The former Chelsea, Bayern Munich, Paris St-Germain and Borussia Dortmund manager repeatedly stressed his love for the English game and for working in the country.

The question of whether a non-English manager should sing the anthem became a talking point recently when the interim manager, former Ireland international Lee Carsley, refused to do so.

When Tuchel officially starts work in January, he will become the third foreign manager to take the England job, following Italian Fabio Capello and the late Sven-Goran Eriksson of Sweden.

Tuchel and his No 2 – Englishman Anthony Barry – have been given 18-month contracts taking them through to the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico.

The German also said he “made up the time frame” for the 18-month contract because international management is a “step in the dark” for him.
