Arsenal followers fume at ‘jammy’ Man City as VAR chaos rescues them three factors

John Stones was the hero once again for Manchester City as he headed in a Jeremy Doku corner in extra time to seal a 2-1 victory over Wolves.

However, fans have taken to X to display their frustration as to how the goal did not get disallowed. Referee Chris Kavanagh was sent to the monitor by VAR to check the offside after the goal was disallowed on the field.

Bernardo Silva had placed himself on the goalkeeper when the corner came in. After giving Jose Sa a quick nudge, he then proceeded to duck to allow Stone’s header to go past the Wolves goalie.

The official offside rule when it comes to interfering with an opponent explains how: “Making an obvious action which clearly impacts on the ability of an opponent to play the ball,” should be deemed offside.

“They are so jammy man,” one fan said on twitter. “Obviously offside. Just another ref who bottles it,” fumed another.

There were still some supporters of the decision made by referee Kavanagh.

“Thank God that Man City goal hasn’t just been disallowed. I genuinely thought we were about to see the worst VAR decision of all time,” said one supporter. “What on f***ing earth is VAR doing asking him to look at that? It is so, so, so clearly not offside. He’s not impacted Sa in *any* way,” said another.

The Premier League Match Centre X account explained that the goal was “disallowed on-field due to Bernardo Silva being in an offside position and in the goalkeeper’s line of vision.

“The VAR deemed Bernardo Silva wasn’t in the line of vision and had no impact on the goalkeeper and recommended an on-field review.

“The referee overturned his orignal decision and a goal was awarded.”
