Glen Johnson reckons Manchester United have blundered by not replacing Erik ten Hag with Thomas Tuchel.
Tuchel was appointed the new England boss last week in a shock move from the Football Association. United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe held talks with Tuchel last season about him taking charge at Old Trafford.
And former Liverpool and Chelsea star Johnson believes United should have landed Tuchel when they had the chance. Johnson told Betfred: “I do believe Manchester United have missed the boat by not appointing him sooner.
“And I feel bad saying that, when there’s a manager already in the job. But these top managers don’t come around often, and the Manchester United job is a tricky one that requires a certain character that can turn that around.”
Johnson is delighted England have replaced Gareth Southgate with Tuchel. He added: “I’m over the moon that he’s the manager of England. We have a fantastic squad – and now we have a fantastic manager.
“The boys are going to love working for him, and I’d be surprised if he doesn’t get the best out of this squad.”
Tuchel will become the third foreign manager to take the hot seat in January – following in the foot steps of Sven-Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello.
He said: “I am very proud to have been given the honour of leading the England team. I have long felt a personal connection to the game in this country, and it has given me some incredible moments already.
“To have the chance to represent England is a huge privilege, and the opportunity to work with this special and talented group of players is very exciting.”
