A man is facing charges for allegedly strangling his mum with the American flag before her boyfriend intervened, according to police.
Adam Sotzen, 39, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa was arrested early Monday morning following the reported strangulation and assault of his mother. Police allege that Sotzen was intoxicated early Monday morning when he appeared at the victim’s residence in North Liberty. The 6ft 3in Sotzen was said to have been upset about an incident earlier in the day, and turned up yelling at his mother.
It’s claimed he then proceeded to destroy property in front of the house, before he entered through the back door.
Sotzen then allegedly shoved his mother to the ground, who in turn got up and went to sit in a recliner chair before her son approached her again.
The report states the 230lb assailant had grabbed an American flag from the front of a nearby home, which he rolled it into a rope, before he wrapped it around the victim’s neck.
Sotzen’s mother told police she fell out of the chair, landing face down, and her attacker climbed onto her and continued his attach the flag around her neck.
“You need to die,” Sotzen reportedly repeatedly said while squeezing the breath from her body, she told police.
When the woman’s boyfriend intervened, Sotzen allegedly punched him in the ribs and the face leaving him bloodied.
The suspect then drove away from the victim’s home and was arrested after being pulled over by police.
Sotzen is now facing multiple charges for Monday’s attack including assault with intent to inflict serious injury, operating while under the influence, and harassment.
He is locked up in the Johnson County jail in lieu of £23,000 ($30,000) bond.
