Gary Neville is taking a step back from his Monday Night Football hosting commitments with Sky Sports.
The ex-Manchester United skipper is keen to devote more time to fresh ventures in the US, including The Overlap US and providing expert analysis for NBC Sports’ Premier League coverage.
Neville stepped into the role of Monday Night Football’s match analyst at the dawn of the 2011/12 season, filling Andy Gray’s shoes. He took up presenting duties alongside Ed Chamberlin two years later, with Jamie Carragher jumping on board in 2015.
Despite regularly butting heads over football opinions, Carragher and Neville have maintained a sturdy partnership. Nonetheless, Neville’s presence has waned lately and he hasn’t featured since mid-August, with Carragher assuming solo command.
Speaking to Rebecca Lowe on the Overlap US, Neville dropped the bombshell: “So tomorrow, I’m expected to do set pieces, whereas with Sky, on MNF, there are some set pieces which I prepare for – but now I don’t do Monday Night Football anymore, I don’t do set-pieces any more.”
Neville began edging away from MNF last year, handing the baton to Carragher as the programme’s main host—a trend that has become increasingly apparent this season.
Though Neville might still pop up on the show occasionally in the future, the format will now primarily spotlight special guest stars rather than the iconic Neville-Carragher duo, reports the Mirror.
Neville, one of Sky’s most senior football pundits, is expected to occasionally join in on co-commentary but may not be present in the studio with Carragher and other experts.
Despite this, he will continue to feature on Sky’s Friday Night Football, Saturday Night Football, and Super Sunday broadcasts while also contributing to Sky Sports Football’s other projects.
In a partnership between Sky Sports and NBC, Neville is slated to host NBC Sports’ Premier League coverage every Sunday of the 2024/25 season, primarily through his live appearances for Sky Sports.
Sky Sports is finalising arrangements for Neville to operate from NBC’s live New York studio for up to four weekends this season, including two appearances before Christmas.
However, English fans won’t miss out on his top-notch coverage as these dates are not expected to coincide with any major Premier League showdowns.
