Shocking CCTV has surfaced of a Labour MP punching a constituent in the face before repeatedly hitting the man while he lay on the ground.
In the clip, former shadow minister Mike Amesbury can be seen standing over a man who had been laid out on the pavement in the early hours of Saturday morning. The altercation took place in Runcorn and Helsby, Cheshire, with footage previous showing him pointing and shouting: “You won’t ever threaten me again.”
Now, new CCTV recordings appear to show the the 55-year-old backbencher throwing a punch seemingly without physical provocation. The pair’s conversation in the lead-up to the punch cannot be made out in the footage. It goes on to show the man being hit six times, with the angry exchange another unwanted issue for Prime Minister Keir Starmer hours before Chancellor Rachel Reeves delivers the Budget, Labour’s first in 14 years.

The video, published by the Daily Mail, sees a group of stunned onlookers surrounding Mr Amesbury. One woman could be heard shouting: “You’re like grown men, what are you fighting for.” As Mr Amesbury walks away from the scene, an onlooker points out he’s the MP for Runcorn, he turns around and approaches the man again, shouting: “Yes I am, and you won’t threaten the MP ever again, will you?”
Mr Amesbury said in a statement yesterday: “Last night, I was involved in an incident that took place after I felt threatened on the street following an evening out with friends. This morning, I contacted Cheshire Police myself to report what happened during this incident.

“I will not be making further public comment but will, of course, cooperate with any inquiries if required by Cheshire Police. I remain fully committed to working hard for the people of Runcorn and Helsby, and am determined to remain an open and accessible MP for our community.”
The Mirror has approached Mr Amesbury and the Labour Party for comment.

Earlier last night, Mr Amesbury attended a policing and community safety meeting with Cheshire’s Police and Crime Commissioner Dan Price, reports the Manchester Evening News. Mr Amesbury held a number of shadow ministerial positions while Labour were in opposition, most recently serving as Minister for Building Safety and Homelessness from 2023 until the election.
He’s a long-time campaigner for reducing the cost of school uniforms. In a statement Cheshire Police said: “At 2.48am on Saturday 26 October, police were called to reports of an assault in Frodsham. A caller reported he had been assaulted by a man in Main Street. Enquiries are ongoing.”
