Ultras storm the pitch as followers run for canopy throughout ugly scenes at Copenhagen derby

There were ugly scenes in Copenhagen on Sunday afternoon.

Danish giants Copenhagen squared off with local rivals Brondby at Brondby Stadion when ultras were able to storm the pitch. Shocking footage, that has since emerged on social media shows Brondby fans rushing towards the away fans wielding flares.

“Everything was almost suspiciously calm at Brondby Stadium, when around 20 masked Brondby fans suddenly stormed down the sideline and attacked the away section with flares,” journalist Lasse Voge shared.

He added: “The Copenhagen fans reacted by sending a shower of flares towards the far side. And when the police intervened, they too were attacked with flares. Huge chaos.

“I hardly dare to think about the consequences of this scandal for the clubs and the fans. It will undoubtedly result in empty stands – and in that way we have all lost.

“Danish football has a problem, and action must be taken, otherwise it is only a matter of time before things go completely wrong and we face a tragedy.”

The Superliga clash was set to start at midday, but kick off was delayed as a result of the shocking scenes. “And there goes another derby without away fans,” one fan admitted on social media.

“You can’t even drink a pint in your seat over here,” a second joked. And another added: “Brondby vs FC Copenhagen. This is unhinged!”

Once police were able to regain a foothold in the chaos, the game was able to get underway. However it was a none event on the pitch, with Brondby holding the Danish giants to a 0-0 draw on their own patch.

Copenhagen remain at the summit of the table, but they could be leapfrogged by FC Midtjylland and AGF, who both hold a game in hand. While Brondby remain in the top half of the table.
