Budget 2024: Bus fare cap will go as much as £3 in Budget, Keir Starmer pronounces

Keir Starmer has announced there will be a £3 cap on bus fares set out in the Budget – up from the £2 cap.

The Prime Minister said the new cap will be set out in the Budget and will be put in place until the end of 2025. He addressed rumours that erupted over the weekend that Rachel Reeves was considering scrapping the country-wide £2 cap on fares.

Giving a speech in Birmingham, Mr Starmer admitted he knows “how important” the cap is for passengers across the country, especially those who live in the countryside and rely heavily on buses. Campaigners on Sunday warned axing the cap would be a disaster as it could see fares jump by over £10 per journey, with critics saying that scrapping the cap would drive people off public transport.

Asked about rumours the £2 bus fare cap will be scrapped, the PM said: “The Tories only funded that until 2024 and therefore that is the end of the funding in relation to the £2 capped fare. I do know how much this matters especially in rural communities where there’s heavy reliance on buses and that’s why I’m able to say to you this morning that in the Budget we will announce there will be a £3 cap on bus fares to the end of 2025 because I know how important it is.”
