A US wood is a hotbed for supernatural sightings and was dubbed ‘Hell’ in a horrific origin story.
Tate’s Hell forest in Florida is notorious for hosting countless interactions with the supernatural, including Bigfoot. It’s perhaps unsurprising, given the spine-chilling story of how it got its biblical moniker. A Reddit thread devoted to the grim woodland has seen many people flock to give their account of “terrifying” experiences. “Went camping with my partner this past weekend in Tate’s Hell State Forest FL but had to cut the trip short,” began one person.
The person described how their night in Hell had him “clutching my rifle all night and waiting for the sun. I can do bears, cougars, and anything in between but RANDOM PEOPLE around your site deep in the forest at 2am is terrifying.”
Another person added how they had a run-in with what they believed to be a mythical “sasquatch” while travelling through the forest. “We see something emerge from the left hand side of the trail. Cross. Stop. Look at us in the truck,” they wrote.
“Then disappear into the woods on the right hand side of the trail. Total of maybe 4-5 seconds. It was on two legs.
“Its arms swung as it walked, its eyes reflected the headlights and its body stood powerfully tall. The details on its skin/fur are a bit harder to describe due to the sprinkling rain and the distance. However, it had dark fur.”
According to Mid-West Bigfoot Researchers, a well-known story from the nineteenth century tells how a man called Cebe Tate lost his life while fighting an “evil beast” in the forest.
“In 1874 Tate went on the hunt for a black puma that was killing his livestock,” the researchers said. “He got lost in the woods and was lost for seven days and seven nights. One morning he woke up after being bitten by a snake.
“Delirious from the injury, he ran through the forest and collapsed somewhere near the forest edge. He lived long enough to just utter the words “my name is Cebe Tate, and I just came through hell!” And ever since then, the forest has been called Tate’s Hell.”
