Man finds $20 observe on the ground and buys a lottery ticket – then wins $1million

A lucky US bloke won a million dollars after deciding to spend a $20 (£15.40) note he’d found in a carpark on a scratch card.

Jerry Hicks thought he’d chance his arm last week when he discovered a loose $20 note in Boone, North Carolina. Hicks, a master carpenter from Banner Elk, NC, went straight to a nearby convenience shop and used the money to buy an Extreme Cash scratch-off. To his amazement, Hicks won $1million (£770,000) from the card, which wasn’t even the one he wanted to buy. “They actually didn’t have the ticket I was looking for so I bought that one instead,” he said.

The man claimed his prize on Friday (October 25), after striking lucky with the scratch card earlier that week on Tuesday. According to CNN, Hicks chose to receive the prize as a lump sum of $600,000 (£462,000) instead of an annuity over 20 years. The lottery revealed Hicks took home $429,007 (£330,000) after taxes.
