Manchester United have discovered the ‘exit fee’ for Sporting Lisbon’s boss Ruben Amorim and are willing to pay his €10million (£8.3million) release clause, according to the Portuguese club.
The Red Devils bid farewell to Dutch manager Erik Ten Hag on Monday (October 29) and shared the news with fans. Now it looks likely the UK football club will appoint Sporting boss Amorim, 39.
“Manchester United have expressed their interest in recruiting coach Ruben Amorim and have said they are ready to pay the 10 million euro release clause,” Sporting said in a statement to the Lisbon stock exchange on Tuesday.
United’s statement yesterday when parting with Ten Hag read: “We are grateful to Erik for everything he has done during his time with us and wish him well for the future. Ruud van Nistelrooy will take charge of the team as interim head coach, supported by the current coaching team, whilst a permanent head coach is recruited.”
Should Amorim seal the deal with Old Trafford, he’d be the tenth gaffer to take charge since Sir Alex Ferguson hung up his managerial boots. The likes of David Moyes, Louis van Gaal, Jose Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, and the recently ousted Ten Hag have all steered the ship at some point.
United’s former aces Ryan Giggs, Michael Carrick, and Van Nistelrooy have also taken the reins on a temporary basis, with Ralf Rangnick stepping in before Ten Hag’s tenure.
Brighton’s head honcho Fabian Hurzeler shared his thoughts on Amorim during a press briefing: “39, he’s eight years older than me. I think that he achieved already great things in Portugal so I saw some games from him and he plays incredible football.
“It’s very dominant in possession. I’m not in a position to give him advice. If he needs advice, he might call Pep or Jurgen Klopp or some coaches like this.
“I’m not in a position to give anyone advice. I’m also in a learning process. I try and give my best. Let’s see what happens in Manchester. It’s always great to face new coaches, to compete with them and this will be another challenge.”
