With just under a week to go until the US election, experts are warning about a “very high” risk of interference in the voting process “just like in 2020”.
Donald Trump is set to take on Kamala Harris in what is expected to be a hotly-fought contest for the White House on Tuesday, November 5. With neither the Republicans or Democrats receiving a late surge as the US approaches its voting day, experts have warned the Daily Star there might be a repeat of the grim aftermath of the 2020 election.
Four years ago – following Trump’s defeat at the hands of now-president Joe Biden – there were allegations of election interference aimed at the Democrats, which ended in the January 6 Capitol attack in 2021.
Speaking to this publication, security expert Professor Anthony Glees outlined how this “could happen again” and indicated how it’s the Democrats who should be worried.
“A Trump victory would be good for certain international figures. Putin sees his chance and Netanyahu sees his chance with a victory for the Republicans,” he said. “It’s naïve to think Putin won’t try and interfere in the election – we know they do that. If Trump wins, [Ukrainian President Volodymyr] Zelenskyy is finished.
“But the thing that Putin said which I thought was most chilling was that the ‘existence of a sovereign, independent nation’ – like Ukraine – was a threat to Russia’s sovereignty.”
In March this year, Russian despot Vladimir Putin claimed he would have no trouble using nuclear weapons if he felt the sovereignty of his country was threatened. In a blunt threat to the West, mad Vlad said: “From the military-technical viewpoint, we’re prepared.”
“[Putin] thinks other post-1997 NATO members are threats to Russian sovereignty and said they ‘will be dealt with’. This is a threat,” added Glees. The expert went on to explain how he thought “the danger of election interference is extremely high”.
Glees said: “The people that count the votes are just ordinary people, like here in the UK. Trump has already said he’s going to get his MAGA crowd in to watch every move, so the fear of intimidation is very real. If they don’t like the result they’ll get that noose out again.”
A recent poll published by ABC News yesterday shows Democrat candidate Harris has established a tiny 1% lead over her opposite number Trump.
